Lift Truck Tank Safety
Among the most common types of lift trucks on the market is a propane-powered model. The propane is used to fuel these machinery and it has some properties which need to be considered when working with the fuel tank. It is extremely important that Personal Protective Equipment or also called PPE is worn at all times to be safe.

PPE
Propane gas is very cold. Very cold in fact that exposure to your skin could cause serious burns to happen. When you are exchanging the propane tank or re-fueling, be certain to wear goggles or a full face shield and thick gloves. Personal Protective Equipment or PPE is a requirement to be utilized on location in order to keep the driver as safe as possible. PPE is a standard workplace requirement for most companies utilizing this type of machine and if the driver does not have the right items on, like for example a hardhat, safety goggles, steel-toe boots et cetera than he or she might be banned from operating the machine.

Inspect the Valve
If you are in the process of exchanging the tank, be sure that the valve on the new tank is definitely turned off prior to connecting the fuel line. This is really essential because when you are inserting the fuel line into an open valve, you will release the propane gas. This condition could result in a potentially dangerous situation.

Fire Extinguisher
Another important safety measure to have implemented is to have a fire extinguisher close by when the tank is being changed or fuel is being added. Nearly all companies have fire extinguishers situated next to the refueling post. It is better to have one close by and not require it, than to need one and not have one nearby. Most safety regulations require this is set up on site too.

Secure the Tank
The majority of propane tanks have either a strap or a restraining device to secure the tank to the machine. Be sure that this device is functioning correctly and correctly utilized so that you could prevent the tank from falling or shifting, as this could also lead to a hazardous condition.
